VISOR’s Choice: Obergurgl – Austria

By | VISOR'S choice | No Comments

If you want to be absolutely sure of snow in the Austrian Alps from November until May, visit the village of Obergurgl, which is one of the highest ski villages in Europe. Located at the end of the Ötztal valley, Obergurgl holds the reputation as Austria’s most snow-sure non-glacial resort. The first ski lifts start at 1.930 meters (!), at an altitude where most other ski lifts stop. Thanks to the connection with the ski area of neighbouring Hochgurgl, Obergurgl’s reputation of being the most snow-sure area only grew stronger. Hochgurgl has a well developed glacier with an altitude of 3.080 meters. The complete area covers over 100 kilometers of prepared slopes with 22 lifts and the off-piste possibilities are endless! Great for guaranteed top ski conditions in all seasons.

The last years Obergurgl has seriously invested in their infrastructure and their ski lifts. Where some ski areas just want to grow bigger, Obergurgl did a good job in maintaining the high quality of their existing area. If you would like to visit a bigger area after a couple of days of intense skiing, this won’t be a problem because neighbouring Solden is just behind the corner. Other alternatives are the Rettenbach and the Tiefenbach glacier, which are only a 30-minute drive away.

Although the area is not that big, it is definitely worth visiting. The Hohe Mut Alm restaurant is well-known, super high class and a recommendation to experience real Tyrolean mountain gastronomy. This restaurant is designed in modern Alpine style and offers a huge sunbathing terrace, which overlooks the amazing peaks and summits of the Ötztal Alps. Obergurgl has got some great luxury hotels and the village literally feels like the end of the valley. There aren’t many beds available, so you need to book early to avoid disappointment.

When you are looking for a high quality, good organized ski village with some great luxury hotels,
VISOR definitely recommends this ski village!
